How can I check and withdraw my Employee Provident Fund online?

Employee Provident Fund is a mandatory saving that can contribute significantly towards the retirement corpus of employees. Provident fund contribution is fixed at 12% of the basic pay and an equal contribution is made by the employer. According to Employee Provident Fund scheme, Employees are allowed to withdraw a certain percentage of the PF amount to cater to personal requirements such as marriage, education, purchase of land or house, renovation of house or repayment of home loan. However, the withdrawal facility is limited by certain conditions such as completion of 5-7 years of service. The percentage of the PF amount that can be withdrawn depends upon the purpose for which the withdrawal is being made.

Until a few years back, it used to be a cumbersome process to make withdrawals from the Employee Provident Fund or even transfer the PF amount from one employer to another. Of late, the EPF organization has streamlined several processes, making it easier for the employees to access their PF accounts. The EPF organization has made it mandatory to allot UAN (Universal Account Number) for all employees covered under the Employee Provident Fund. The UAN will be linked to the EPF account of the employee and will be portable throughout the life of the employee. This has made it very easy for the employee to check his EPF balance online and plan his finances.

In order to check your EPF balance, you need to follow these steps:

  1. Login to the EPFO portal
  2. Click on “Our Services” tab and choose “For employees” from the drop down menu
  3. Select the “Member passbook” option under “Services”. A login window will open.
  4. Login using your UAN number and password and check your EPF account balance.

If your UAN is synced with your KYC, you can enjoy the convenience of PF balance check online or by sending an SMS, a missed call to the authorised number. The “m-seva” app of EPFO has further simplified things for the employee by enabling him to login to his EPF account from his mobile phone, using his UAN and password.

A complete withdrawal from Employee Provident Fund account can be made when the employee retires from service or when a person has been unemployed for two months or more. Partial withdrawals are allowed in case of specific personal requirements. There are two ways in which you can make an application for withdrawal of PF amount:

By Making a Physical Application

The physical application can be downloaded from the EFPO portal. The composite application form from the portal falls into two categories – Aadhaar and non-Aadhaar. If you are using the composite application form (Aadhaar), you do not require an attestation from your employer. The composite application form (non-Aadhaar) requires an attestation from your employer.

By Making an Online Application

An online application can be made only if the following conditions are satisfied:

  • Your UAN is activated and the registered mobile number linked to it is in working condition
  • Your UAN is linked with your KYC

For making an online application, you have to login with your UAN number and the password. You need to check your KYC by clicking on “Manage” and selecting “KYC”. Now, you need to click “Online Services” and click on “Claim” and proceed to make your claim.
